Here is a local barn we believe was constructed in the 1920-30s. The GA DOT/Forsyth County allowed us to pull the structure down and reclaim 100s of board feet of old pine and oak. Our barn doors, tables, serving platters and some of our mantels were made from this wood.
After cutting, carving and sanding a mantel, here we are applying the first of 3 coats. After the first and second coat, we lightly sand with 0000 steel wool to assure a smooth, even and durable finish that will last generations.
A friend of ours invited us over to do some cutting with his Alaskan Saw Mill. We will definitely have to get one of these, head out to the forest and make use of some fallen trees.
3 key things to have when you are cutting with an Alaskan Saw Mill:
1 - a level surface for the guide to travel on
2 - a powerful saw
3 - a SHARP chain
Apparently I hit two bolts that were under the bark of the tree just before Bo got on the saw. When it's spitting out dust instead of chunks of wood, it's time to sharpen your chain. :-/
Getting the rough cut 6x8 ready. My daughters 'enjoy' working in my shop but only for short periods of time. I asked them once on a scale of 1 to 10 how much they like it and they said 7 b/c they get to cut and sand things. I'll take whatever time they give me. :)
